Early Inspiration and Journey into Psychology
Christine Racanelli, PhD, is one of Westchester’s leading psychotherapists, with a career spanning clinical practice, research, and mentorship. Originally drawn to medicine because of a fascination with the brain and neurology, a personal loss in college led her to therapy and inspired her pivot toward social work.
“A therapist helped me through a difficult loss in college, and that experience changed my path.”
She earned her master’s in social work and then a PhD in clinical social work. Her early career coincided with 9/11, a moment of collective trauma that deeply shaped her focus.
“Around the time I completed my PhD, 9/11 happened. I became interested in compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress, how therapists deal with collective trauma. I researched what drives resiliency in therapists.
This research led her to create a thriving practice for adolescents and families while also igniting her commitment to support other mental health professionals facing burnout.

Empowering Other Therapists: Coaching Program
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Christine noticed widespread burnout among mental health practitioners. This inspired her to launch a training program aimed at helping therapists, coaches, and other practitioners turn compassion fatigue into resilience.
“I don’t want to be a safety net. I want to be a trampoline. I want to catch people and help them go even farther than before.”
She emphasizes that healthcare providers often put themselves last, leaving them depleted. Her program and practice work with professionals to prioritize themselves, rebuild energy, and regain joy in their work.
“Burnout is often seen as a weakness. I’ve learned that the work is in the body, not the checklists. I work with successful over achieving clinicians who have done what they are supposed to do to practice self care and do the work. They have worked through their own history. They have the books on their night table. They’ve had the massages. They drink their tea. They journal. And they still feel burned out and traumatized by their work because their bodies got lost along the way. They are left to wonder how they can find their way back and live the life they want. That’s where I come in.
Her upcoming coaching platform will provide structured training and mentorship for therapists seeking to maintain mental health, navigate stress, and sustain long-term impact.

Legacy and Impact on the Mental Health Field
Christine hopes her work inspires mental health professionals to embrace vulnerability, prioritize self-care, and normalize the message that it’s okay to not be okay.
“Community is one of the best ways to get through challenges. We need to embody our work and embody ourselves. The more we talk about it, the more we feel it on levels we’ve yet to experience, the better we can do our jobs and find satisfaction in life.”
“It’s okay to not be okay all the time.”
Through her practice and coaching program, Christine continues to set the standard for compassionate, resilient, and empowered therapists in Westchester and beyond.

Empowerment and Personal Philosophy
Christine prioritizes her own wellbeing as part of her philosophy on empowerment.
“Entirely ‘me’ time that no one will be asking anything of me. That’s sacred time for me.”
“Movement is really important for my body and mental health. Even when I feel mentally stuck, I need to move.”
She wakes up at 4 a.m. for quiet workouts and emphasizes family time, humor, and laughter as essential tools for resilience.
“Humor is an essential defense mechanism we all need to use.”
“It’s an honor to walk alongside clients and observe their growth.”

Trailblazers Experience: Celebrating Authenticity
Participating in the Trailblazers project was a transformative experience for Christine.
“Being part of this project has been incredibly motivating. Seeing the other trailblazers, the incredible women accomplishing amazing things, sometimes against difficult odds, it’s eye-opening.”
Her photoshoot experience allowed her to explore a side of herself rarely expressed in her professional life.
“I’m usually more of a crunchy outdoors person, so getting made up was a little scary at first. I was nervous, but I eased into it. When I saw the pictures, I thought, ‘Holy cow, that’s me?’ I never imagined myself looking like that. It looked amazing.”
“It felt like a metamorphosis in some ways.”
“It was really fun. There was no pretending who we are. It was just so authentic.”
