I recently had the honor of photographing Aswathi Arun, a dedicated Kuchipudi dancer and instructor, alongside her sister, Revathi, for the Revolutionary Dancers Project. This project celebrates the artistry, diversity, and journeys of dancers, and Aswathi’s story deeply resonated with our vision. Her relationship with Kuchipudi began in childhood, spurred on by her mother, despite her own initial reluctance. What began as a journey rooted in her mother’s insistence blossomed into a passion that defines Aswathi today. She now runs Kuchipudi with Aswathi in Purchase, NY, where she inspires the next generation to embrace and cherish this ancient dance form.
Kuchipudi, characterized by its dynamic footwork, expressive gestures, and intricate storytelling, is a revered tradition of Indian classical dance. Aswathi has dedicated her life to mastering these elements and teaching her students to honor its rich heritage. By bringing her mother and sister into our photoshoot, we honored not just her evolution as a dancer but also the two women who were instrumental in shaping her path. Their presence added depth and authenticity, illustrating a family legacy intertwined with dedication, art, and resilience.
The photoshoot was a rewarding experience on multiple levels. Preparing traditional costumes and intricate hair and makeup was just the beginning. The care taken in every detail reflected Aswathi’s devotion to upholding the authenticity of Kuchipudi. As she moved gracefully through her poses, I marveled at how her expressions told a story with each shift in stance. The art of Kuchipudi thrives on conveying emotion through precise gestures, and Aswathi embodied this essence beautifully.
From a photographer’s perspective, the session was a visual feast. The richness of her dance attire—layered fabrics, detailed jewelry, and bold colors—combined with the precise forms of her poses to create visually stunning compositions. Capturing her alongside her sister and mother added layers of meaning to each image. These photographs were more than artistic captures; they were a tribute to culture, dedication, and family.
During the shoot, we played traditional Indian music, transforming the atmosphere into a meditative, rhythmic space. The beats of the mridangam and the melodies of traditional instruments created an immersive experience, deepening the connection between photographer and muse. Every frame felt intentional, capturing the bond, elegance, and cultural heritage that Aswathi represents.
This session underscored why I am passionate about photographing dance in all its forms. For anyone seeking Indian classical dance photography or artistic dance portraits in Westchester or the NYC area, capturing this art form is about more than technique—it’s about preserving a living tradition. Kuchipudi, through Aswathi’s dedication, continues to inspire young dancers from diverse backgrounds to carry forward its legacy with pride and passion.
