Sometimes the most iconic images happen when you least expect them. That was the case with Aditi and Sanjay’s engagement shoot, when we were walking back to the car after golden hour. We thought we were done for the day, but then Aditi spotted a walkway and said it reminded her of Italy. She wanted something epic there—and I knew I had to create it from scratch.
The Scene Without Flash
At around 5pm, the natural light in the walkway was soft but flat. It wasn’t strong enough to give the depth and drama I knew this spot deserved. Straight out of camera, the scene looked pretty but uninspired—not the kind of work I’d want to sign my name to.

Building the Light
To transform the space, I relied on my lightweight and portable kit:
- Manfrotto Nano Light Stand – perfect for moving quickly at the end of a shoot.
- Godox R2 Flash – strong enough to overpower the soft ambient light.
- MagMod Full CTO Gel – to add a warm, golden-orange glow that matched the mood of the Italian walkway vibe.
I placed the flash behind the couple, slightly to the left, making sure it was hidden behind Sanjay’s frame so it wouldn’t peek out between them. Then, I cranked the flash up to full power—this was the secret to creating those bold shadows and strong separation.
The “Drunk Walk” & “Penguin Pose”
Since they were already tired, I didn’t want stiff posing. Instead, I told Aditi and Sanjay to walk toward me naturally, laughing and looking into each other’s eyes. I call this the “drunk walk”—when couples are giddy with love and moving without thinking about the camera.
Along with that, I had them do the “penguin pose”—attached at the hips, looking upwards, and laughing together. This creates a striking silhouette effect, with their bodies joined in one elegant line while their expressions radiate joy.
This ended up being the shot they loved most. They chose the penguin pose silhouette as wall art for their office space at home—a reminder of their love captured in an iconic, timeless way.

Tips for Nailing This Shot
- Flash Placement Is Everything
Keep the light slightly off-center, hidden behind the taller or larger subject. This ensures the flash doesn’t spill through the middle of the couple. - Wrap the Light Around Them
By angling the flash just enough, you can create a glow that highlights both partners without losing definition. - Adjust for Recycle Time
If you’re worried about your flash keeping up, lower the power and raise your ISO. You’ll get more consistent firing while keeping your couple engaged. - Direct for Connection, Not Posing
The technical side is important, but emotion makes the image iconic. Encourage your couple to laugh, tease, and enjoy the walk—or in this case, lean into each other for that perfect silhouette.
The Final Frame
The winning shot was the one where the technical setup and the emotional connection aligned perfectly. The golden backlight framed them in a romantic halo, their laughter brought life to the frame, and the composition pulled it all together.
What began as a casual walkway at the end of the shoot became one of Aditi and Sanjay’s most iconic engagement images—proof that sometimes the best photographs come when you create magic from nothing.
